“When?” is a very important question.

in Communication, Seeing Clearly

Yesterday I discussed not getting good answers because we don’t ask the right questions. A related issue is being sure to ask when.

Doing the right thing too early or too late can cause huge problems. Sometimes doing the right thing at the wrong time is worse than doing nothing at all. Adding to the problem is the fact some folks are unwilling to admit to, much less apologise for, wrong timing. Some people act as if doing the right thing makes you right, and anyone who has a problem with your timing just needs to get over it. Such an attitude is difficult to work with, and leads to relationship problems.

Doing the right things is a combination of what and when. Miss either of those, and you’ve not done the right thing. If you ask about the what, but not the when, you’re flying half blind, and there’s a good chance you’re going to make a mess.

Bottom line: Ask when, and get a clear answer.

I don't think about the when as often as I should.
