More thoughts on applying The Sermon on the Mount to marriage.

But I say to you, Do not take an oath at all… Let what you say be simply ‘Yes’ or ‘No’” [Mt 5:34a & 37a ESV]

There is some debate among scholars about what Jesus meant here. Some say He was forbidding any oath at all, while others argue Jesus was dealing with the proliferation of false and manipulative oaths common among Jewish leaders at the time. I tend to fall on the latter argument because we have examples of Paul making an oath (Gal 1:20 for example), and of Jesus answering when asked to swear “by the living God” (Mt 26:63&64).

Leaving that aside, the bigger picture is we should be so faithful to do what we say that no oath is necessary. If you say you’ll do something, do it. If you say you’ll not do something, don’t do it.

Trust is a vital ingredient for a healthy, happy marriage, and being a man of your word is a sure way to build solid trust.
