What Priorities Communicate

in 2013 Awesome Husband, Acts of Service, Communication, Encouragement, Quality Time

My bride has had a few negative comments on Move Him Up the Priority List, her post from yesterday in which she said, “If you routinely (or even frequently) say no to sex, then something is amiss in your marriage relationship. Take the time to figure out why your husband is so far down on your priority list and keep at it until you see healthy change.”

I doubt I will get much opposition to that idea here, but what if we take the larger concept and apply it to other issues? Try these on and see if they fit:

  • If you routinely do not have time for your wife, something is amiss in your marriage relationship. Take the time to figure out why your wife is so far down on your priority list and make a change.
  • If you routinely fail to do practical things around the house, something is amiss in your marriage relationship. Take the time to figure out why your wife is so far down on your priority list and make a change.
  • If you routinely are unwilling to talk with your wife, something is amiss in your marriage relationship. Take the time to figure out why your wife is so far down on your priority list and make a change.
  • If you do not routinely complement your wife, something is amiss in your marriage relationship. Take the time to figure out why your wife is so far down on your priority list and make a change.

The point is we make time and energy for what matters to us. If we fail to make time and energy for our spouse, we communicate that we do not really care much about them.

Now before you tell me how busy you are, think about what you do for fun, or relaxation. I am not opposed to those things, you need them. However, if you manage to find time for those things but not for the things your wife want and needs, what are you communicating to her? You are telling her that your wants and needs are far more important to you than hers are.

To roll this back around to sex, if you complain she never has time for sex while you fail to make time for what she wants, you come off as a hypocrite!
