Is this thing on? Testing, testing?

Monday, December 28th, 2009

Hi Gents,

Sorry for dropping out you y'all.  I spent most of Saturday updating the five WordPress installs that I manage, and building a sixth.  All seemed well until I went to post a tip, and I found that the Generous Husband blog had some significant problems.  I think it's all fixed now - this will serve as a test post to verify that e-mail and RSS are working correctly.  BTW, in getting things fixed the cookie code was changed - so if you had "log me in automatically" set you will have to log in again now.

To manage a tip out of this - the problem seems to have come from some very old code that was still hidden away here.  When this blog was built, it was run from the server via a backdoor so that the old system could stay active till I was ready to switch over.  When I switched over, I failed to remove one reference to the way the system was set up and tested.  That code sat there, forgotten, for months, surviving through a number of updates.  Then unexpectedly an update stumbled over that code and made a big  mess.  I had to find and remove that old reference, and then do some fixing.

Do you have any "old code" or "old references" in your memory?  Things long forgotten that seem to be unimportant until some event trips you, or your bride, over that old code?  It can be a word, a look, a question - something that taps that old memory and unleashes a flood of pain, hurt, anger, or some other undesired thing.

It's tempting to think these things can be buried and forgotten.  It's easy to rationalise that dealing with these things is a bad idea - let sleeping dogs lie as it were.  Trust me, these things have a way of getting you, and they usually do it at the worst possible time.  Rather than being at the mercy of the unknown, find a good time to deal with things that could come back to get you.

See you in 24 hours

Due to a server upgrade that did not go perfectly (do they ever?) and the need to work out minor issues and check things, there is no tip tonight.  Be back tomorrow.

Get more out of TGH, and help others do the same

Sunday, August 23rd, 2009

If you just read the tips, you are missing out. We have a growing number of guys making comments on the web site, and there are some great ideas and insights being posted. You can read comments without "joining". Comments are also available by RSS.

Here are some ways you can make TGH better for others:

Post comments: You know something that will help others - please share!  To post a comment you will need to register with the web site. Your first comment will be held for approval (this keeps spam out). If your comment is too short, or used too many "sexual" words, it may be rejected as "spammy".  I will be adjusting the spam filter in September to make it less of a problem.

Rate Posts: If you are registered and logged in, you can rate posts on-line with one to five stars.  This helps in two ways - it shows others which old posts are worth their time, and it helps me get a feel for what is liked and not liked. Please - don't just rate the one's you like, I need both what is liked and what is not to help me provide tips that are better for y'all.

Donate: Okay, this benefits me more directly than y'all, but it does trickle down to both the quantity and quality of what is here. Donation information here.

Missing tips?

Friday, August 14th, 2009

If you are getting tips daily, or read on-line, please disregard this.

The system that sends tips via e-mail directly from the web site has been having issues - as new categories are added.  If you do NOT need to filer out tips marked as "Sexuality" I suggest you move to the Feedburner system, which has run very well for months.  If you do need to filter tips, see the third section below:

To get off the old system:
Go to the web site - http://www.the-generous-husband.com
Log-in (right side near the top)
Click on "dashboard" under control panel (right side, where log-in was)
Hover over the "Profile" tab on the blue bar at the top and then click on "Subscriptions"
Uncheck all boxes, and click the "Update Preferences" button.

To get on Feedburner:
Click here, follow the directions, reply to the confirmation e-mail

To add missing tips to the old system:
Go to the web site - http://www.the-generous-husband.com
Log-in (right side near the top)
Click on "dashboard" under control panel (right side, where log-in was)
Hover over the "Profile" tab on the blue bar at the top and then click on "Subscriptions"
Check all boxes for subjects you wish to receive, and click the "Update Preferences" button.

Lack of tips?

Not getting all the tips?

Friday, May 15th, 2009

Tips are sent daily - are you getting them all?

A number of e-mail systems, including Yahoo, routinely dump so called list mail. Sometimes this is over aggressive spam efforts, other times it is because a companies mail servers are overloaded, and they dump mail to catch up. List mail is high on the list of  mail they think they can dump safely.

The best solution if you are not getting all the tips, is to move to the feedburner system. Feed burner is big enough and motivated enough to go after companies that regularly dump their mail, so they are far less likely to get dumped.  To sign up for tips via feedburner e-mail, go here.

To kill the tips being sent from this system, log-in on the rigth side of any page on the web site.  The click the "dashboard" link - also on the right side, under the "Control panel" heading. Under the "profile" tab click on "Subscriptions".  Lower left of the next page, check, then uncheck the " ".  This should clear all the check boxes.  Click on "Update Preferences" and you are done.

Note - I have sent this information now because the most recent tip was sent to most if not all Yahoo users.
