Agape, eros, philia, and storge
Many of you will recognise the title as the four Greek words that mean love. A study of those words will make your head hurt, and leave you wondering if you know less after the study than before you started. If you stick to biblical Greek it’s not as bad as the multitude of meanings suggested are fewer, and you only have three to contend with – eros not being in the New Testament (although it is used twice in the Greek translation of the Old Testament).
I bring this up because I would like to discuss the various feelings a married couple can have for each other, and my initial thought was to use the Greek words for love as a starting place. The more I dug into those words, the less I wanted to use them. Firstly, I don’t think they convey the thoughts I have well, and secondly I don’t want to be accused of, or guilty of, putting my own meanings onto words already burdened with far too many opinions.
So, over the next few days I will discuss the ideas of love, friendship, romance, partnership, and lust. (Lust may not be what you think it is!)
