Happiness = Reality ÷ Expectations

“A mathematical formula for happiness: Reality divided by Expectations. There were two ways to be happy: improve your reality or lower your expectations.” ― Jodi Picoul

You think that’s valid? Can you be happier by expecting less?

Certainly unrealistic expectations lead to disappointment, but so too do low expectations. Multiple studies of students have proven kids live up to or down to what is expected of them, and adults are no different. Be it the expectations we have for ourselves, our spouse, or our marriage, both too high and too low will result in a less enjoyable life.

The key then is finding that narrow range between expecting too much, and not expecting enough. Including your wife in finding that place would probably be a good plan.

  1. I’ve long said it’s “high standards, low expectations” that helps me with happiness. I don’t settle for less, but I also don’t expect everything to go swimmingly. I aim high, but expect some misses. Great topic!
